Bounce is a simple game requiring only split-second timing and a little
luck. A window opens with some GEMs on it and your playing piece
(technically known as your LITTLE GUY or LITTLE GAL, aka LG) bouncing back
and forth across the window. The object is to make your LG pick up the GEMs.
The first catch to this simple scheme is the only control you have over
the LG is changing its direction. The catch to this first catch is that to
make a change in direction you must put something in the LG's path to bounce
it, hence the name of the program. This leaves you to wonder: 1) What sort
of thing an aspiring LG would bounce off and 2) How one might go about
placing such a thing in the LG's path.
Your second clue (the first being this text) comes in the form of a
requester which appears before the game starts, and which you can make
reappear later by pressing the Help key or selecting "About" from the menu.
This requester says, among other things, to use the LEFT and RIGHT cursor
keys. The LEFT cursor key puts a left slash ("\") in front of the LG, while
the RIGHT cursor puts a right slash ("/") in the LG's path. So, if the LG is
moving left to right and you put in a "/", the LG bounces off it toward the
top of the screen. If it runs into a GEM along the way you get some points
and the GEM disappears.
Points: Placing a slash costs you points, though not as many as you
gain for getting GEMs, so you want to make every move count. Once you're out
of points, you can't place any more slashes. If the LG doesn't then run into
a GEM on its own, thereby getting you more points, the game is effectively
over. One last point on points: You get some bonus points for getting all
the GEMs within a certain amount of time, so it pays to be quick.
You may be wondering about that second catch. The second catch is
actually two things: BLOCKs and BLACK HOLEs. BLOCKs are, well, blocks. They
get in the way and you have to work around them. BLACK HOLEs are a little
tricky to navigate. If you fall into one, you pop back out of another one
somewhere else in the rather small universe of the game. No BLOCKs or BLACK
HOLEs show up in the first round, but they do show up later on. In addition,
they are both optional and can be turned on or off with the menu or with
Right-Amiga-B and Right-Amiga-H command key sequences.
Right-Amiga-Q, the Close gadget on the window, and the Quit option in
the menu will all quit the program.
GREAT BIG HINT: Figuring out which slash to use and remembering which
slash goes with which cursor key is harder than you might think. A / can
make the LG go up, down, left, or right depending on its initial direction
-- right, left, down and up, respectively in this case. As an aid to
maintaining your sanity, the left and right slashes are shown in the title
bar to the left and right, respectively, of the program title. Glance at it
just before you put in a slash and you may save yourself some hair.
